Real Estate Pro Tip Series: 5 Ways to Revitalize Your Home

Updated: Oct 23, 2022

After a couple of years of being a homeowner, you probably start to feel like your home is a little outdated & stale. The past couple of years have changed the way many people use different rooms in their homes, from needing office space for work to using the garage for a home gym. Whether you feel like refreshing your home or your needs have changed, you can bring your home back to life affordably with these 5 Ways to Revitalize Your Home!

Real Estate Revitalizing- Remodeling - Paint Choices

1. Change the Layout

A great way to revitalize your home is using what you already have in a new way. Re-arranging furniture to open up the floorplan of a room & re-envisioning those spare rooms for new functionality are the most affordable way to bring new life to your home. With a lot of people switching to a work-from-home schedule, setting up offices in spare rooms is a trend that is becoming very popular. Depending on your home, you may need to get creative in common areas to set up these workspaces. Some people have even opted for turning their closets into a fully functioning office! Take the time to plan out these spaces to make the most of them & don’t forget to keep in mind the lighting/reflections such as the glare on a TV.

2. A Fresh Coat of Paint

Updating your color theme is one of the easier DYI projects that can add new life to your home. Whether you have had the same colors in the kitchen for 5 years or the exterior needs a new coat, take the time to find your style & go for it! Although some cabinets can be refreshed with a couple coats of paint, you may want to consider replacing them with more modern styles & functions. However, freshening up the color themes is more than slapping some paint on the walls, we recommend having a plan. Choosing neutral colors will attract more buyers but a pop of color on a featured wall can really liven up the room. Furniture & decorations should match the interior finishes but should also add some focus points to the blank canvas.

3. Light Up the Room(s)

Over the past couple of decades, lighting has become one of the most important features of a home. From choosing thoughtful window coverings to selecting brighter light fixtures, there are plenty of ways to bring more light to a room. Homeowners can use neutral & lighter colored finishes & you may consider a large wall mirror to reflect the natural lighting. It’s important to have light fixtures for different times of the day & also your favorite activities (i.e. having a reading lamp). If you really want to light up a room, make sure you have multiple sources of light including a balance of natural & artificial light sources.

4. Invest in New Furnishings

Since furniture will wear out over time, updating those pieces will bring new life to your home. Investing in a statement piece of furniture like a new coffee table or a breakfast table on a patio will captivate the attention of your family & guests. Adding in some new artwork or refreshing your family photos can create new conversations pieces in the home. Including some decorations & ornaments in thoughtful places can enhance the aesthetic of each room by bringing bare surfaces to life. Consider adding different textures & aromas to address all the senses in your furnishings.

5. Add Some Life

With people spending so much time at home recently, there’s no better time to bring outdoor life into your home. The impact that fresh, high-quality air has on our health & happiness is important to consider when trying to liven up your home. Adding house plants & opening windows on a nice day are two easy ways to do so & you may even consider growing some vegetables on a balcony or above the kitchen sink. Although not everyone is a pet person, having a new family member in the home can have so many benefits. Find the style that fits you & don’t be afraid to go a little exotic with those pets & plants!

Make it a DYI Weekend

The fact is that most of us will get bored or tired of our living spaces after a couple of years but there are plenty of easy & affordable ways to bring new life to the home. From moving your furniture around to replacing worn-out pieces, updating the furnishings can provide a sense of new life. Homeowners who add potted plants & improve lighting fixtures will enjoy a brighter & more lively home. If those home improvements aren’t your cup of tea, a little DYI fresh coat of paint can quickly revitalize your home.
