Real Estate Pro Tip Series: 5 Tips for Setting Up the Perfect Home Office

Updated: Oct 23, 2022

Working from home has become the new normal for many people. Buyers who are looking to purchase a home are considering this “office space” during their search. Unlike these buyers, current homeowners must work with what they currently own. No need to worry though! With all the DIY tutorials out there, all you need is a little bit of creativity & elbow grease to be all set up.

Here are 5 Tips for Setting Up the Perfect Home Office to get you started!

Setting Up the Perfect Home Office - Comfortable & Ergonomical Workstation

1. A Clean & Organized Workspace:

Sounds like a standard homeowner practice at this point but decluttering is the first step in setting up a home office as well. If you’re like us, you have a collection of pens from all over the city…gather them up & put them in one of the mugs you probably also have! Truth is, having your daily work gear front & center without all the excess will help you be more efficient with your time.

ProTip: A cluttered workspace is one of the greatest enablers of becoming sidetracked & logging in to those addictive social media apps (at least during work hours)!

2. Set the Mood:

Would you rather work in dark & gloomy or bright & refreshing? Arranging your workstation near large windows or adding more light fixtures can really help you avoid that “cubicle life”. Having the ability to add potted plants & even scented candles whenever you wish is a huge benefit of working from home.

ProTip: If you like to listen to music, add some speakers to your workstation to help keep you motivated. Be careful not to overdo it with the volume or style of music as that can be counterproductive.

3. Create an Inspiring Space:

The best part of having a home office space is the freedom to decorate your space in a way that inspires your A-game! From family photos to those vacation tickets, creating an inspiration board will help keep your spirits high through that 3 pm coffee break.

ProTip: DIY possibilities are endless, don’t hesitate to get creative with your layout (Pinterest Boards will offer unlimited ideas)!

4. Strategize Your Equipment:

Your dedicated & functional workstation should FEEL like a dedicated & functional workstation! Whether that is an appropriate computer desk or an established nook for paying the bills, keeping this area in working order will help to keep the routine. A comfortable & supportive chair will make those longer work periods waayyyy more bearable & a seamless tech setup will prevent you from pulling your hair out!

ProTip: Create a Goals Board to keep your eyes on the prize! Add your to-dos & important reminders to this board so you can stay on top of tasks.

5. Do a Background Check:

In the age of virtual meetings, it’s always a good idea to check your background regularly for anything you wouldn’t wish to share. Even bills hanging on the fridge or laundry in the baskets are something you should remove prior to any meeting. You should at least keep things clean & decluttered if you are on video calls.

ProTip: Add some items that could be appropriate conversation pieces like your favorite artwork, souvenirs, or books!

A Home Office that FEELS like Home

Working from home can have a lot of benefits, especially if you spend time setting up your home office. Obviously, you will need to make sure that you have the equipment to accomplish your tasks, but a little TLC can take your home office to the next level. Cleaning & organizing your workstation will increase your productivity by having fewer distractions. Adding proper lighting and setting up near a window personally saves me from that 3 pm slump! Everybody has their own tastes so think about what inspires & motivates you when adding non-work-related items to your station. Whether you’re a business owner or a college student stressing over finals, taking the time to strategize & set up your office will help you make the most of your workstation.
